I am looking at buying a good used Q9650 to replace my Q9300 just for the extra speed it offers as i don't want to replace my mobo just yet as i am happy enough with it.

What sort of OC could i get out of this processor??

Thanks.

A slightly cheaper alternative would be the q9550 EO stepping. Though x48 boards are known to be fsb limited with 45nm quads. P45 chipsets were better at eeking the best out of them.

im currently using a q9650 with a gigabyte p35t-dq6 motherboard : http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2636#ov

its p35 chipset so fsb overclocking with the 45nm cpu is no luck for me above 400mhz. either way i run the cpu at 3.6ghz on stock volts and have been running it like this for almost a year and a half now with no intention of upgrading this platform for a long time yet.

id say its on par with my i5 750 setup which runs at 3ghz (very mild oc).

good thing about the q9650 is that its not very hot and i run it with a sunbeam core contact freezer with gentle typhoon fan 1850rpm on mobo voltage control so runs at 900rpm ish when doing most things.

i do however want something more powerful for the video encoding i do, so will have to see what happens, currently if i want to encode i split the workload across the 2 machines to get speed.

if u can get the q9650 cheap enough go for it. 3.6ghz is damn easy to do with most of those chips doing it at stock volts. my previous chip was a q9550 when i gave to my bro, he been running it at 3.4ghz on stock volts too for over a year now with no issues. its over kill for him anyways since all he does is watch movies, surf the net and play champ manager and pro evo soccer.

Thanks all, i have just bought the Q9650 so look forward to receiving it.
Rangler, please can you tell me what cooler you are using and also what bios settings you have to maintain a stable performance @4Ghz.

Overclock pics

These are the settings from my E8400 but theyre exactly the same as my Q9650 all i did was swap this chips :)

Also a rather pants video of my overclock bios settings here http://youtu.be/qTm6efnm_Rs

Would a Q9550 do the same? I have a Q9550 and the same board as you running at 3.4Ghz

Yes it could, depends on the CPU and how high an FSB you can get, however the Q9650 would be easier with the higher multiplier.

PS - You can still get a good overclock with speedstep on.
