Just done my first overclock and general nosey about the bios (still on stock cooling so thought it was pointless, but thinking of getting the H50 in the summer along with a Fractal R2) but some thing's it threw up.

Set bus speed to 375MHz, bios says with a multiplier of 8 that comes to 3.00ghz exact, in windows when doing the classic "right click on my computer" it shows as 3.19ghz, any idea why? There's also a setting to increase the multiplier by 0.5which I've disabled.

CPU-Z isn't being helpful as I must have a setting somewhere that lowers speed usage and multiplier when not needed, is this just a personal option or should it be removed?

Still need to run prime95 though, but seeing other poeple this is running in safe limits.

Also anybody know what HPET mode is? It's set at 32bit but has option for 64bit. Iam running windows 7 ultimate 64bit.

edit: Maybe not safe! According to speedfan core temps are into there 70s! Although I do have a temp3 at -2c

Best using realtemp for correct core readings.

You have 'speedstep' enabled in the BIOS, That's why cpuz is giving lower clocks.

I would get better cooling before OC'ing mate.

Windows reads the CPU's actual Multiplier as apposed to the one set in the BIOS, for example, my chip is running 438 fsb with an 8x multi making 3.5gz... windows see the FSB but reads the stock 9x multi and thus shows the CPU at 3.9ghz... I wish :)

CPU-Z will show you the actual speed correclty.

cheers, put it back down to stock speeds...well 2.89ghz, just checked.

Is speedstep just a personal choice? Really things only get pushed when rendering.

And any idea about the HPET mode?
