Started to have a look round after feeling the PC runs err somewhat slow.

I'm running a
q9950 stock
4GB RAM
Enough storage to sink a battleship
ATI Radeon 5800 - game prob about once every few months.

What's the platform of choice these days?

Upgrade wise I'd be looking for
CPU
motherboad
8 / 16GB RAM
SSD?

Everything else is covered.

Used to follow tech all the time, but gave up and just do IT at work now. Although this week's Exchange 2010 course has been fun, hence the thoughts of much do more at home again

tbh if you only game once or so a month, then upgrading may not be your real answer

i would get an SSD, this will boost your speed/reaction times massively...

i run the amd 640 quad and i run bf3 easily with my 560!

keep your setup, get an ssd, reinstall windows and you will see your system become faster on boot times, install times and much more..

get the samsung ssd 256gb... this should be more than enough

I have thought about that along with a RAM upgrade. Was originally looking at a SSD for the laptop, but I'll look at both.

as i said, my athlon is on par with your core 2 quad, and i run most games without any hassle what so ever...

upgrade next year when you have more money...

there is no point upgrading when your system is perfectly adequate for the job now...

get a 256gb ssd, upgrade to 8gb ram (ddr2 or ddr3 dude, wouldn't mind knowing?) and your sorted until next year.

if you are not gaming, then why upgrade a system that is perfect for browsing and casual gaming as it is?

DDR2 unfortunately - assus P5-Q Pro

hmm ddr2 is expensive... try and get some cheap second stuff

Yup, what I'm using at the mo - Corsair CM2X2048-8500C5 so need to look into another kit at some point

Part of me thinks with the cost of DDR2 etc. it'd be better to sell motherboard, CPU, RAM, Noctua HSF and start with something reasonable.

RAID SSD?

Other plan for disks, I have 2 x 1TB drives that have sat in the cupboard for the last 12 months + - Originally planned to put them in a NAS

Disk wise I have

2 x 80 GB
2 x 1TB
1 x 250GB
1 x 160GB
1 x 160GB external
1 x 320GB
