Posting on behalf of my brother. Right now I do not know his budget, although I will get that out of him soon.
His daughter is now 1 and they are fed up of coping around the 3dr Honda Civic they have - they want something bigger and he was originally taken with the Kia Sportage. Recently his attention has also been drawn to the Nissan Qashqai.

I get the impression he's looking at something 3-4 years old - so those massive depreciations out of the way. I know Kia are offering 7 year warranties now and I'm guessing you're looking at 5 on a Nissan these days? So he'd have a bit of dealership warranty to give him a bit of safety.

Any recommendations of one of these over the other? Must admit I have no experience of either brand let alone exact models. Is there anything else in the similar SUV market he might also take a look at?

As I said, no budget listed, but I don't think he wants to go older than 3-4 years and you can probably make a good estimate of his budget on the vehicles already listed.
I'll point him at this thread - cheers for any input.

My in laws bought a new Kia Sportage. I was really scathing (in my head :D) but I got in it and had a good look round and was forced to admit that it's actually very decent. It turns out I'm a horrible brand snob!

Have to agree there, my other halfs parents live in Cyprus where the roads can often turn to hill trails(!) they have a 2015 Sportage and I thought very much as you did, until when we were out there her father took it over some rock strewn sand dunes to get to a lovely isolated cove, it's off road ability and refinement whilst doing it staggered me and it's on road manners were superb, it was smooth, quiet and supremely comfortable, it very much has changed my perception of Kia.

Driven loads of these, and for the money, the Qashqai 1.5dci is extremely hard to beat in regard to current models. I would drive one of these every day with no remorse other than performance on rare occasions.

The older Qashqais aren't so good.

Thanks for the replies.
He has a budget of around £10k plus trade-in value of his current car (56 plate petrol Civic) - so knowing trade-in's I'd say his total budget should be around the £11k - £11.5k
If that makes any difference to the suggestions or would place one over the other.

Cheers again.

Take a look at the mitsubishi asx range too. Sister was looking at similar cars and ended up getting the 3 or 4. seems to be a pretty decent far so far :)

I had a KIA sportage KX3 for a while (courtesy car for about 2 months).

If you can get over the fact that its a KIA.....it was a great car.

The only issue I had was that the fuel consumption was pants. Bearing in mind its an unsexy 2.0L diesel, the best MPG I could get was around 29.

In my C32 I was able to get 26 at best.......so errr yeah!

I got a Qashqui and I find it small with for our baby. With the ISO fix adapter and baby seat the passenger seat is literally as far forward as it can go for it to fit! The boot is rubbish. We are trading ours in for something bigger tbh.

Take the KIA badges off and stick a BMW or AUDI badge on it and jobs a goodun, the neighbors will be none the wiser.

I would probably echo this actually. Although the wifes car is perfectly acceptable to get about, well equipped and *touch wood* nothing gone wrong with it. The boot is terrible and once you have the car seat in not much room for the front passenger even.

Not sure on interior space on the Sportage, however interior and drive wise I would go for one over the Qashqai. Due to budget at the time the Sportage was just out of reach so the Nissan was second choice.

Many of the smaller SUV dont actually offer any more passenger or boot space than something like a Civic, the 5 door Civic is a cracking car for a small family as the boot is decent and rear seats can be folded in a couple of different ways.

I'd be looking at a Estate or a bigger SUV like the CRV.

Drove a 2.2 diesel one of these and it isn't as good as the Qashqai imho (and I drive a Mitsubishi so am a fan of them generally).

I've been keeping an eye on these posts as I'm in the same boat. The qashqai always seems the best choice but as already said it's not much more space over a car. No one seems to mention the qashqai +2 version is there something I'm missing?

I was looking at getting an SUV and looked at qashqai and sportage. You really need to sit in them and test drive.

The Kia was surprisingly nice inside and drove well, engine isn't the best though and the mpg doesn't look great.

Qashqai is quite small inside, better drive and engine than the Kia but too small. The +2 is better.

CRV is better than both imho.
