Qashqai queries

My girlfriend is thinking of buying a car (probably next year) and having decided she wants something spacious & high has pretty much settled on a Qashqai based on how it looks :p

I know very little about them other than from a quick search through this forum most are 2wd, they are reasonably good mpg wise compared to other cars of that size & that they have become very popular & depreciate quicker than an X-Factor winners popularity.

She isn't bothered about the depreciation & would be buying 2nd hand anyway although probably aiming to be no older that 3-4 years. The queries are:

  • What kind of options can you get with these cars engine wise (and which would be recommended given I will end up driving this I suspect a fair bit & while she will prefer the mpg being better I prefer not being bored senseless :D...may need to find a compromise.
  • I assume it is worth trying to find an awd version rather than stick with 2wd just to have that added bit of versatility
  • Are there any other options vehicle wise that are similar but better while being near in terms of cost

Cheers.

There aren't really any decent engine options but they do come with quite good kit levels as standard.

Very much a mum wagon but they're pretty good at that to be fair

I've also got my eye on a SUV type vehicle, so far the Kia Sportage is leading the way for me. I'd only go for the AWD version if I planned on doing a lot of offroading.

Get the panoramic roof , makes such a difference to feeling of space inside.
As said engines are all a bit meh

We have an N-Tec spec which has panoramic roof, sat nav, bluetooth, 360 camera, bigeer alloys and rear tints. I think the seats are slightly different to the bog standard items too.

We tested the diesel which felt and sounded a bit like driving a van. We have the 1.6 petrol automatic 2WD which is as slow and uneconomical as it sounds. My wife is not well so we have it through motobility.

Decent car really. You'll find a lot of them 2nd hand will be ex-motobility so spec is usually high (they all have to have rear park sensors) and low mileage - although if I clip the scenery in ours I struggle to care as its effectively a loaner so you might find the odd scrape here and there - wheel chair into the boot is a good one for marks.

Off roading probably isn't a plan but would it not be worthwhile with the way our roads get when it gets to freezing temps vs the 2wd option?

Sportage could be an option, how do they tend to compare against the Nissan in kit levels & price etc? Guess the 7 year warranty would be a bonus with the Kia.

I guess a decent engine isn't the end of the world as I still get to play with my 350z most if the time.

I honestly can't imagine any reason why the Qashqai would really need 4WD. I've always assumed it was a megane jacked up a bit.

Its not an off roader at all and 4WD will probably just make it use more fuel. Personally I wouldn't bother.

To be honest the auto box isn't that bad. You hardly notice the changes. The steering is very light. Driving my A4 this morning it felt very heavy - it also felt like a rocket compared to the Qashqai engine so I would avoid the 1.6.

I can't add much to this other than I had a 1.6 petrol qashqai as a hire car to take from norwich to reading and back, it felt really underpowered and wasn't particularly economical!

I don't find them that big inside - they just don't feel that spacious, but you just sit high. Good for equipment though but aren't exciting cars.

Mazda cx-5 is worth a look if your budget will stretch that far. I was looking at either the sportage, q3 or cx5 and after driving all of them and weighing up finances the cx5 won by a mile. cracking car to drive and very good economy wise (getting 53mpg which is not too shabby for a 2.2 diesel)

We have a 2.0 diesel auto qashqai. I think they came with AWD as standard with that engine and box, you have the option of 2wd, auto or 4wd.

It's been a reliable car compared to our mondeo! the auto box is ok, no where near as good as a vag dsg box.

It's not a big car, cheap to run, we have ours serviced at Nissan.

It's not a luxury car, but it's a nice car to casually drive in. If we were buying again, I think an older Volvo xc or a VW tourag would be on the short list as they have better boot space. (we always compare against the Mondeo, which had an impressive boot).

The car does 40 miles a day and returns around 38mpg according to the trip computer.
