QNAP 209....Public access safe?

Not long had my 209 which i love.

Only problem i seem to have which is with all my machines (win7 /xp /vista / mac) is accessing the shares due to permissions with different users .etc .etc. and windows telling me the drives mounted even though its not


I have my itunes library ,downloads , docs all stored on the NAS and shared between all the machines and often itunes cant find the library and the download managers cant see the download folder due to permissions of the shares and users.

What id like to know is ,is it safe to have all the defualt shares (qdownload/qrecordings/qmultimedia) set to public access so i can bypass all the poblems im having?


I know this is a risk die to them not being password protected but is it safe with me only being in my home network only?


Is the only way anyone going to get acess to these is by gaining acess to the LAN?

I also use the FTP side of the NAS a lot could this alos be a risk?

I don't anything about the QNAP box but I would say your security will largely depend on the router (modem) internet facing firewall... A statefull inspection firewall covers a multitude of sins!! I've got my Windows network fileshares on a public (read-only) access setting. But I wouldn't port-forward the smb ports through my internet facing router firewall!! That's what VPN is for...

Is the FTP option on the QNAP accessible on the .net? That could be a security hole there if you aren't using sFTP, secure shell or a VPN, etc.
