Quad 12L`s or something else?

I am looking to upgrade my Mission 772`s with something a bit better so i am thinking of going for a pair of Quad 12L`s I like the sound on these and they are currently on special offer £399.

Should I go for these or is there anything better in my price range <£450

The speaker must be bookshelfs.

I don’t like B&W`s I don’t like the sound. And the Amp they will be paired with is a Nad C372.

Any Suggestions welcome.

I went into my local hifi shop to dem some speakers a while back...

The lineup consisted of two Dynaudio offerings, a ProAc offering and a Quad offering (plus a few largely irrelevant speakers). The manager of the shop was serving me at the time, I know him well and my mate also works there so there was little to no BS going down...

He admitted to being "embarrassed" to wheel out the Quads against the competition, saying they did nothing better individually than any other speaker and failed as an overall unit. I have to say, I would tend to agree with him. Perhaps not as extreme as that, but they certainly didnt excel in any particular area.

They also look horrendous! You ought to be able to *just about* squeeze some s/h 62s in for your budget but they arent exactly easy to get hold of - people tend to hold on to them!

Given an upgrade budget now, personally there would be little competition for the Dynaudios (to my ears, anyway).

Keep an eye out on ebay for some Tannoy S8LR speakers, someone on there was selling loads off very cheap. Theyre a good sized bookshelf speaker but pack a punch with an 8 inch dual concentric driver. Cost £100, £800 new

Arent the 62s floorstanders?

I had a look on ebay , sadly cant see any for sale.. i tried looking at completed listing and i am getting no results , maybe I am searching for the wrong thing.

I have tried searching for “Tannoy S8LR” and “Tannoy S8”

Hang on a minute, you said that you like the sound of the Quads. Did you listen to them? If you like them perhaps you can get a home demo to try. I heard the 11l briefly and was pretty impressed. They have a beautiful finish too... although that's not as important as the sound. At the end of the day it's what you like the sound of, not us!
