Im still running a phenom 2 940 be but cant get near the 4gz mark. currently im at 3.7 so im planning a new chip. What would be reccomened without being crazy expensive that will reach the 4gz mark and above?

thx

The Phenom II 965 often reaches 4ghz but I think (correct me if I am wrong) you will need to look towards Intel or wait until Bulldozer if you wan't above 4ghz.

Right now the only AM3 upgrade I'd consider in your situation would be to a hex core, and only if your motherboard will take it.

If not, wait for Bulldozer. Or just keep the 940 seeing as it's still a very strong chip.

why do you wany to get to 4GHz? is 3.7GHz too slow to run your current apps or do you just want to say you made 4GHz? my 555 is stuck at 3.9GHz Tr-Core, which is a shame as 4GHz quad would have been nice, but for a £70ish chip i think its pretty good. how are you getting to 3.7GHz, just upping the multi or playing with the fsb too? are you at the max voltages/temps? do you know its the cpu that limiting it and not the ram or mobo? you could shell out on a new cpu only to find it was another piece of hardware or a slight setting that is holding you back.

This. Wait till bulldozer! That chip at 3.7 should handle everything within reason

what are you actually doing with this computer, because if its gaming, then the processor is almost certainly not the problem, it will be the graphics card that is the bottleneck to the peformance

if you really do want to overclock your CPU more, with my very limited knowledge i would suggest getting a better processor cooler. by the way, wht processor cooler do you have now?

Your lucky to get current gen AMD that'll hit 4ghz, even more so for going above. Wait for bulldozer or go sandy bridge if your rig is struggling.

Currently im running a swiftech waterblock on it and and with voltage at 1.5v vcore i cant seem to get any higher than 3.7 this is 18.5 x 200, infact last night when streaming a movie my temps hit 70 c =p but im pretty sure i can lower my vcore to about 1.475 to help heat issues, and ive also ordered a bigger radiator.. I also have an unlocked 6950 so its not too much of a bottle neck.

The rig is used for gaming and the current game im playing is cpu intensive more so than gpu so would be nice to have a higher clock.

I also thought since ive had this chip for ages now there must be a lot better chips out there?

I'd say to keep the 940, my 940 is at 3.7Ghz as well and I am able to run everything perfectly, if you can afford the upgrade go for it. You can even attempt to upgrade other parts of your system, like maybe a SSD or GPU?

Wait until Bulldozer. From my experience there isn't much of a performance gain after 3.8ghz.

A Bulldozer or SB should be a nice upgrade from the 940 anyway, no point jumping to another Phenom II :p.
