Hi,

Is there any real advantage on a Quad Core CPU v Core Duo ?

Talking everyday computing, as I don't know if there are programs that support Quad Cores.

Thanks

Thanks, lots of interesting advice debate, PC only gets used lightly most of the time, not often more than 3 processes running. I did notice the advice to wait a few days on price drops.

Was going to chooses between these 2

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.16GHz (1333FSB)

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB)

Motherboard is Asus P5E64PRO with OCZ 4GB DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz

All the other bits are fairly decent quality. So which one to buy ? if there are real benefits in going Quad fair enough, i just thought there was not much support software wise. I don't do any overclocking.

The op essentially asked,

The simple answer is no, the dual will be more than enough.

I dont think there is any further argument needed?

Just grab an E7200 and you'll be sorted. Notepad and calculator will love you! Joy!

Err that would hardly do, my choice is between the 2 CPU's I asked about, I have an 8400 at the moment, I was hoping to upgrade and move this one to a second machine.

Why do you want to upgrade? Nothing wrong with that E8400. Not like you have a 1.6ghz celeron.

Not it's not, but it is going in another PC, not in the bin, so might as well try and get something a little better, hence my question on what way to go...:)
