Now you can browse the net, listen to music, check your email and write a letter AT THE SAME TIME.

hmmmm, quad core in a shelf pc eh? x600 ati card, 2x 256 sticks of ddr2 ram and probably some self made mobo and psu thats worth less than a briefcase lock that was bought from the pound shop.... overall cost of manufacture, 30 quid, selling price, 700 quid............... this is why everyone in my family fuss me 24/7 about pc advise, alcohol + relatives = proudness of my techness.

pish posh, i say let them ruin peoples lives, just gives geeks like us who clean up the aftermath of broken down pc's more work :D

why dont they build them with graphics cards to go with the CPU's they so readily advertise

Look, a quad core.... with onboard sound and graphics.

OK - Am I missing the big "Joke" here.
Firstly - of course you're all going to know quad core machines exist.
You're computer geeks so of course you will.
Likewise if my particular profession happens to revolve around LCD TV's I'll know exactly what is what - probably a lot more so than those "general" people who know nothing.

Then specification wise of the machine you've just listed.
Do you think £699 is really all that bad for a piece of kit that will satisfy the needs of the majority, comes with a 19" LCD display and will also come with a 3yr warranty?
Sure you could build one for less - with each component probably only having a 1yr warranty.
Should one of those components fail you need to find which one, get it sent back, wait for replacement.
Anything goes wrong on the £699 machine in 3yrs the whole thing is sent back, no messing about.

I'm sure somebody will point out the big joke I've probably missed - I'm tired and busy building new PC's at the moment (quad cores as it happens).
But really, I'm failing to see it...

Interstingly I was browsing on a certain auction site last week for quad chips and found a number of listers decribing the chips as running at 9.6 ghz (4*2.4)
hmm surely a bit deceptive there?

Just what on earth will joe public use a quad core for? its a joke as they are simply splashing fancy numbers and tech speak to impress the general public :)

That's what I was going to say, totally pointless. Even most people here have no need for quad core, including myself. I only bought a dual core when the 4400x2 was £300 because I do a fair bit of multi-tasking with music encoding in the background, and had entire collection to encode so with that it would be much faster.

A 2ghz single core will more than enough for joe public.

that pc is under "gaming" and has a 8300gt, mostly because the people buying it dont even look at the graphics etc... just hearing "quad core" will sway them over to getting it, which is the joke.
