Quad core is it worth it?

With the recent price drop if u can nab a Q6600 @ £350 it may proove a good deal, also consider how long you keep your system for, if your not planning on upgrading again this year then Q6600 without question.

you mean the upcoming price drops

I know there are hardly any apps that can use all 4 cores but what about multi-tasking, I usually have several browser tabs running, i-tunes, excel, Outlook etc will Quad Core be any help here?

Thanks

Nige.

Yes, it will make a HUGE difference to the speed at which you can flick through the tabs. Well worth the extra £200 imo.

Actually its about £40 difference when buying a complete new system, so I may as well get one.

Yes, had enough of building my own & the systems I am looking at seem to have pretty good spec. which is difficult to match price wise when self building.

lol... you're not being serious are you? You tell me how much the PC you want will cost and i'll build a better spec myself for the same money each and every time. I think you have it the wrong way round... :)

Just to follow on from what other people have said, go with dual core for now. Dual core is only just starting to be used. I am going to skip quad core all together, by the time the majority of games have proper multithreading Nehalem will be around the corner, which will have up to 8 cores, which I will try to hang on for :)

Wouldn't it be worth dropping the QX6600 to a Q6600 and buy a 8800 GTX with the change?

I guess that would be a good idea however the option to downgrade the CPU is not a choice on the vendors site.

The spec of the systems is changing all the time and has just been upgraded from the Q6600 to the QX6600, and there will a new range out next week so I guess I will just see what is available then.
