i'm using windows 7 with intel quad q9550 and i'm converting a video file in avs converter but the operating system lags. i didn't expect this to happen with 4 cores. can somone tell how to fix?

I won't really be able to help, but I know the first question asked is, what's the system specs.

if i was to guess, i would say the convertor is using all 4 cores to the max, so everything else seems slow.

if you want to still use the pc while doing the conversion, u could change the priority of the convertor program

find the task in Task Manager, then set the priority to below normal, then it'll just use the spare processing power, and not all of it.

it will slow down the conversion abit, depending on what ur doing on the pc

More likely to be RAM or Disk IO, i've never managed to get my CPU to 100% encoding and the system generally is responsive even when the CPU is maxed.

i notice only a slight bit less lag when i set it to low priority but not as much as i would like and the cpu is still 100% in use. anything else i could try?

if that didn't help, then most likly as sldsmkd, it could be memory.

u could check your ram and page file usage while its encoded, also, do u just have the one drive ?

if so, then u could be using all the drives bandwidth so everything else is slow trying to access it.

u could set affinty on the process so it only uses some of your cores to slow it down abit
