Hey guys as i got myself a job at pc *****(dont boo!!) over christmas i finally have some money to build a new pc in january. My brother is buying me a case and giving me his old x1800 XL, my dad is getting me a PSU and my m8 is getting me a dvd-rw haha!
So i am left with the HD, CPU, MOBO and RAM.
As i am building in Jan my main question is how much do you think the cheapest quad-core CPU will be (amd or intel)? Do you know when any price cuts will come into play? For example i wont mind waiting untill february to build.
Im looking into getting a seagate 7200.10/11 HD and 2gb of pc2-6400.
I am unsure of the motherboard but i want one with a 1333fsb if its intel so i can use the newer intel CPU's although i know some use 1600fsb. By february do you think AMD will be priced more reasonably? Could i get a quad-core for £120-130?

Cheers all :D

Cheers guys. Yeah its a shame they tend to make older processors end of the line. The new penryn 9300 will be about the same price as the Q6600 right? Hasnt it got less L2 cache IIRC? Would it be any faster?

Not a bad price at all. However, you'll have to think very carefully as to whether that £20 saved buying a Phenom is worthwhile when ultimately it's 200MHz slower than a Q6600, is slower clock for clock and at this point of time is yet to be seen overclocked to speeds past ~2.75GHz stable.

If you're buying next month, I suspect your money is best spent on an Intel P35 based Motherboard and a Quad Q6600.

Yeah good point. Im going to wait till Jan/Feb sometime and see if i can either get a phenom for £100 or a Q6600 for £130

Morguk, Just out of interest, why do you want a quad-core?

Just becuase i dont want to upgrade my processor anytime in the near future. As everything is going tri/quad core i want to get onto the band-wagon, especially as more games will be taking advantage of 4 cores.

Haha PikkOn yes PC ***** are a rip off with most of there products, but a job is a job :p
