Ok finally got the cash here for new setup.
(I posted this a while back - just checking nothing has changed)

Going QX6700.

Need

Motherboard :
Ram (2gb) :
CASE :
CPU Cooler :
GFX : BFG 8800GTX

Dont really need the most fantastic motherboard...... not looking to get the most expensive.... but one that will be stable ... same with the memory.
but dont need to get the cheapest either.

Am going from athlon 64 3400 and 6800GT so will be happy with the upgrade Im sure :)

Am going BFG 8800 GTX for gfx

and I believe I will need a new case.
(I have a pretty big chieftec case right now ... not sure if I will need another)

Have Enermax Galaxy PSU ... opticals... and raptors already.

Want to order this afternoon. Care to advise on the few parts I need.

How much do you actually have to spend?

CPU cooler - Tuniq Tower 120. You could get a lower processor modle like a E6600 and invest in a watercooling kit if you want to overclock.

Maybe look for a X6800 or a Q6600. Not much uses the quad core currently but it is up to you.

Look at getting a 680i mobo. EVGA, BFG, MSI they are all the same different bundles etc. The Asus Striker Extreme and Abit IN9 32X-MAX have more than the others like Wi-Fi etc.

For the RAM maybe some Corsair Dominator or G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HZ

G.Skill

Case all depends on your budget, maybe a LianLi V1000 or V2000. Or maybe an Akasa Eclipse 62 if you can not afford a LianLi.

true - not much quad.... but starting to get into 3d Max... and the thought of it rendering maybe 50% less.... and I make videos as well .... games - 2nd place ... but Im sure it will still perform.

Have a dell 2407 ... so resolutions aint maxing that I dont think....

as for the case... not bothered really as long as it fits !

I have Enermax Galaxy - just reading this wont fit in a Lian Li PC A10B

so any more suggestions on the case.

Just noticed the Q6600 - more to throw in the mix - are there any comparisons for the this to the Q6700 ?

cheers Azza

3D Rendering Performance using 3dsmax 7 & CineBench 9.5

Encoding Performance using DivX 6.1, WME9, Quicktime (H.264) & iTunes

Both QX6700 and Q6600 are on there.

QX6700 is not that much faster than the Q6600. The Q6600 shouldnt be hard to overclock to 2.66 to match the QX6700 performance.

Enermax Galaxy in a Lian-Li V2100B Plus

Quite expensive. It will fit in a V2000.

thanks for the help fellas. After much thought I went for the following :

Coolermaster Stacker 830 Case (alas silver...)

BFG 680 Motherboard

BFG 8800 GTX

Geil PC6400c4 Ultra Low Latency DDR2 memory

Tuniq Tower 120 CPU cooler

Intel QX6700 Kentsfield flavour....

I did chop and change between the 6600 and QX - but I thought it will run quick.... and when / if some software uses the 4 cores... will be worth it.

One last thing :

I have 1 DVD writer
2 36gb raptors
1 160gb hitachi drive.
1 enermax galaxy 850 W PSU
1 XiFi Fatality sound card
+ external drives (usb2)

what fans will I need for the case ?
can you recommend these please.

Guess you will want silent fans, so Ill say Akasa Ambers. Many people will say Yate Loons. I have never had one but they are meant to be really really good.
