Hi,

I'm going to upgrade my aging P4 system and just wondered what people thought of the following or had recommendations on the following:

Gigabyte GA-X38T-DQ6 Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)

Corsair 2GB DDR3 CMS3-1066C& TwinX (2x1GB)

Not sure on the graphics card yet and I'll probably get 4GB memory instead of just the 2GB.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

M.

My recommendation would be to avoid the X38s and DDR3 until more people have tested them, they don't offer any significant performance benefits at the moment but do cost significantly more which makes them a hard thing to recommend unless you have to be on the bleeding edge.

For my money I'd go with a P35 based motherboard and 4gb of good PC6400 then go down the pub with the rest or save it. :)

Abit IP35 Pro + 4 Gig of Geil 800Mhz Ultra Low Latency+ Vista x64. I have this with the Quad and it's Ggggrrreeeat :D Quad should overclock to at least 3.0 and probably 3.4ish (no guarantees though;)).

Is 6400 memory enough for a 1066FSB processor? I ask as it's 800MHz?

Yep, no worries. Long explanation short Core2Duo/Quads are quad-pumped on the FSB so to reach 1066mhz you only need 266.5mhz or PC4200 but I'd always recommend at least PC5300 or PC6400 so that you can overclock if you can afford it (the difference is usually only a couple of pounds anyway).

Ah okay - that's just a confusing way of doing it but nevermind I get it now! I'll grab some 6400 as that's dirt cheap at the moment anyway!
