Would i see an increase in perfomance in games if i went to a E8*00 series processor from my Q6600, based on stock clocks on the processors.

Well i am getting a 48** series card end of september, or depending what nvidia prices are like one of them.

The higher clock and lower power consumption is tempting me though as parents complaining bout power bills. :(

I did the same move (3Ghz Q6600 to a 3.6Ghz E8400). Much less PSU usage according to my UPS and the system is noticeably faster for general usage and games.

I don't see really any benefit tbh. I think it's best to have the four cores sharing and splitting system resources in the background which would otherwise be split over two cores no four. It might not be the best solution for all out willy waving FPS but in real applications it does make a difference.. And games will start making use of multi threading including quad and later possibily oct.

I've gone from an E2180 @ 3200 to a Q6600 @ 3200, and while yes, most games don't use four cores (or even 2!), I'm set for when they do start to use them, Alan Wake springs to mind. And one game I have that does use them (SCom) runs superbly with it. Glad I made the upgrade.

If that's the case, maybe get an Asus P5Q-E board and use the Six Engine software? Just a thought.

I love it. Shame it can't be used while overclocking but I'm extremely impressed with the low power usage, silence, and still it's able to perform well when called for.

The difference is power consumption is small, very little on the bill indeed. You'll lose many, many times that by buying a new CPU and selling your old one. Low powered components are a false economy most of the time.

difference in power is not a lot ? you sure ?

say at an average overclock of 3.4 gig at 1.44ish Vcore

Q6600 must be running at a good 170W ?

E8500 @ say 3.9 gig is probably about 70W ?

both my guesses

100W less is a lot in my opinion
