Quad Core?

I recently sold some of my old equipment for around £100 and thinking of a little upgrade.

I have a [email protected] currently. Is it worth a jump to the Q6700 or something else?

I do encode and such and the extras cores may be useful, but its primary use will be for gaming.

The quad core will certainly increase your performance in multithreaded apps. In games the increase will not be felt so much - most current games are not multithreaded, so a faster dual core gives you better performance. However, the q6700 will overclock further than 3.2Ghz (i'm guessing your 1.8Ghz chip is maxed out), so you should get a nice performance jump in games.

Out of interest, what is your graphics card? A 3.2Ghz Core 2 should run most games pretty well (gta 4 excluded). It may be a better investment to get a new GFX card like this.

I'll second the part about gta4 will run on a dual core, I had it running on a 3.4 ghz e7400 but things like traffic density and shadows needed to be turned down to near console levels

I have a 4850 currenty, which I will hold on to for a bit. Most games play pretty well, besides games such as Crysis.

My other reason in wanting to upgrade is to try out a quad core really. I was hoping for a boost in general computer use, since I browse a lot and open a lot of applications.

In that case- a quad core would be a good thing to get. You will likely find your general bwindows performance increase and it will be more than enough to not cpu-limit modern games.

At £139.99 for a q6700 is a very good deal. I would recommend against the q8*** series though, they don't clock that well, have less cache and cost more.
