When will they release, e.g be in stock on OcUK? and will there be a huge difference over the Conroe's? so far I've heard the Conroe's are really good.

a) looking at release within the next month-two months
b) imo probably not going to see a large increase in performance over conroe due to hardly anything being quad encoded
c) c2d conroe is still going to best bang for buck quad core is waste of money imho atm!

Is it going to be a lot more expensive than conroe's?

The Q6700 will be priced around the same as the Extreme Edition, so around the £700 mark.

If you're not sure whether or not you need 4 cores then you most likely don't. It's not going to benefit most users, hence it not being targeted at the mainstream.

Ya well it was just a thought because I was kind of thinking of building up a computer, I already have some of the parts. But it came about because I didn't see the point in buying DDR RAM when DDR2 is out.

The thing I need to know, I Was thinking of getting an Intel Core 2 DUO Extreme Edition X6800 next year because I dont overclock my CPUs and need the fastest available to tide me over until I go Quad Core, but I have heard that the new Quad Chips may replace the current X6800?

Need to know if OcUK will still have the Core 2 DUO X6800 for sale next year for some time?

Thank You! ;)

I sometimes overclock my CPUs just for test, but on general use I keep them at their default speeds, is safer that way and i`m also not very good at overclocking.

Gibbo has said that stocking of the x6800 will continue untill stock runs out... if there are none next year you can buy mine if you like :)

if the price is the same between the x6800s and the qx6700s it would be crazy to buy the former. Im sure the x6800s will drop down in price soon. (this year)

early next year we have a new set of them, the cheaper quads and the 1333 bus duo's.

safer than what? and how can you not be any good? all you have to do is move a slider or similar lol

i think he should be directed to the "all you non-overclockers, why don't you overclock?" thread in the overclocking forum, might clear a few of his worry's up as i too was shaky the first time i oc'd and nearly cried when i couldn't get my comp to power up after a bad oc, then i realised just reset cmos :)

Surely if something is programmed to utilise multiple cores (ie dual core's), then they will utilise 4 cores as well?

Correct to a point. If an application is multithreaded then it will work with multiple CPUs but it depends on how many threads the application actually uses. If a "multithreaded" application only works with 2 threads then no, a quad core isn't going to help at all. Obviously if it works with 3 or more threads then it will.

But still, a lot of people aren't even 100% sure about what even dual cores can do for them. My main point is that the cost of the CPU is going to put it out of most peoples' reach anyway. Most people seem to be waiting for quad core without actually understanding what it's going to do for them ... and also without realising the price tag.

But surely multithreading is multithreading (I might sound a bit thick here...). If a program is made to use multiple cores, then surely it shouldnt matter how many cores a cpu has, the program should make sure of the maximum amount of resources available?

^^ completely agree, quad = waste of time for 90% of the people on this forum at the min

as i have said before it's purely e-penis growth and bragging right of having a quad core! also how much these going to be putting out lol?
