Do Q6600 processors need a powerful fan? Do they get very hot?

I am seeking a quietish PC so want to know how noisy this beast is.

Depends on the HSF you use. The stock cooler is ok, if you dont OC the Q6600.

3rd Party wise, its all about your choice of Fan. If you OC it, I'd suggest a Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme and a decent silent fan - mebbe a scythe. Others will be able to recommend a decent fan choice here.
 
I have a Tuniq Tower bolted to mine and it comes with a rheostat so you can vary the fan speed. Very quiet on the lowest setting, and not very noticeable until you stick it on full.
