Hi

I'm sure this has been asked before but i was wondering whether I would see significant benefits with using a Q6600 quad over a E6600 duo ?

the rig will be for mainly gaming. I even read somewhere that the quad will in some cases reduce gaming performance ? Is this true

Is it likely that games will be developed in the future to use quads, or will duo be sufficient for the foreseeable future

does it warrant the extra dosh ?

I think it's much like the DX10 question. By the time you need it, you'll probably be upgrading again to newest stuff. Duo is going to do for me for a while yet.

If i were you i'd wait untill the intel price drops and see what the difference in price is. If its negligable, say £20-£30, then go for the quad imo

If I was buying right now I'd stick to a Due core.
The quad cores are all based on a 2x2 (2x Duo Core) system.
The second generation of Quad cores will be true 4x individual cores and then we should see some very impressive performance.

If your only going to be using your pc for gaming, Quad is a waste. By the time Games do start using 4 cores, something else and better will be out.

You will benefit from the extra speed (GHZ) at this point in time.

I read a nice set of tests the other day. tbh the top quad chip came out top on everything, even non-multithreaded tests. Obviously the multithreaded tests it was way way ahead.

Ill try and dig out the article :)

What was the Quad and what was the Dual Core?

Quick question regarding the quad chips: is the stock Intel cooler supplied with them good enough to cool it adequately at stock speeds? Wouldn't be overclocking at all, just a few comments I have found regarding it imply that it is completely useless and must be replaced immediately to avoid instability due to overheating. Seems a bit harsh s'all.

yes

Yeah, I thought that too. I guess it's just people expecting temps to be the same as regular Duo chips, seeing that they're not, then promptly blaming the stock cooler for everything. :p
