Quad or not?

I was thinking about getting a new top of the line system with a quad core etc. Was to be used for video editing of the AVCHD format, maybe using pinnacle 12 ultra or somesuch.

Question is, is a quad core actually better than a dual core for this? Will the software acually use all the cores, or am I wasting my time with a quad core?

Any thoughts welcome!

Anyone actually done any AVCHD editing? I've heard it's not easy?!
