I have just got a computer for my young son which has a:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 at 2.40Ghz

My computer has a :

Intel Core 2 DUO E8600 3.33GHz 6MB Cache 1333FSB

Which is better in your opinions

I made a thread like last week similar to this and im a gamer and i was recommended a quad.
I gave a choice between:
Q9650
E8600

the Q9650 is clocked at 3GHz, the 6600 2.4, not allowing for OCing
For me it'd still be a close call between a Q@3 vs [email protected], most games dont use more than 2 cores, you can count those that do on your fingers, as such a higher clocked dual is better than a slower clocked quad, as I say a Q@3 vs [email protected] is close call, but a [email protected] vs a [email protected] is no competition, dual every time. Of course when you throw OCing into the mix the arguments becomes more complicated

I'd still go with e8600 for gaming.
Just because games can use quads, doesn't mean that they utilize it fully.
I've yet to see a game which uses more than 30% load on all 4 cores.

The e8600 for gaming imo. Without an overclock as stated previously in the vast majority of games.

I suppose it also depends what the GPU is as that will be the limiting factor.

Q6600 GO stepping - i have been using it for about a year and a half very impressed with it and probably wont be upgrading to i7/i9 for a while yet!

I have tried the Q6700 and the E8500, I prefer the E8500, thats what I now use.
Choice between a Q6600 and an E8600, I would choose the E8600 all day long.
I use my PC for office, gaming, listening to music and browsing.
