Just got my hands on a Quad Q6600 based machine just wondering.. it seems that of you's that are using SMP you are using it under linux... yet i have to run this machine under Vista is it faster or something under linux??

A lot of us run VMWare under Windows in order to run the Linux version inside a virtual machine. The points are still a bit better than the Windows version, and it's a lot more stable.

Sirius's most excellent and just-about-finished SMP Guide should get you started. You'll be well inside the top 20 folders with that system :D

The only problem being that for a quad you have to run two instances of VMWare to make use of all 4 cores since the free version of VMware can only use 2 cores max - still works but of course it's likely a bit demanding on memory

Doesn't Cob run 3 or 4 instances of the SMP client to get full usage of his cores?

Yip I run 4 clients.

Two VM's using two clients and 2 cores each, or a single native Ubuntu install running 4 clients.

Interesting. I've experimented with running two clients on my E6300, but the total PPD is almost exactly the same, although it uses 99% of my CPU instead of 90%.

I think it might be because my chip only has 2MiB cache, so they're just fighting each other.

Will 2GB be enough to run all 4 cores then?

Depends how much else you do on the rig, I suppose. I assign 500MiB to an instance of Ubuntu and that can run two SMP clients - you could probably get away with a bit less. It would likely be fine as long as you didn't play too many games, etc.

I'd say you need 32Gb RAM & just run the standard windows client:p
Don't want you to tax this quad too much & I need the headstart before you stomp me big time.

VMware has prove any easy way for me to run Linux & it will help the team's ppd & help fill the gap caused by the loss [temporary] of Divine madness.
I've found that a lower command rate of my DDR ram makes a bit difference compared to a <100 MHz o/c

Can you not run 2 virtual machines? What about 2 copies of VMWare? [Realises I'm out of my depth:confused:]
