Hi guys,

Hope you can help.

Just helped build a friends new system - pretty much top spec:

Core 2 Quad Q6600 (Unefficient one)
OCUK 8800GTX
4GB Geil DDR2 6400 (Only 1GB installed for testing)
500GB Hitachi SATA HDD
Thermalright CPU cooler (great big thing plus 120mm fan.)
EVGA Nvidia 650i Mobo
Enermax 620W modular PSU
Lian Li PC7

On power on, it will not POST and the monitor (Cibox) says (no input signal found)

My initial thoughts is that it is either the motherboard of gfx card as it wont post. The motherboard lights come on, gfx card fan starts up, and PSU fan starts on power on - just no POST. Other fans come on but NOT fans which are connected to the motherboard. When they are connected to molex instead via adapter, they work fine.

Am I right in thinking that it shouldnt be a motherboard short as the system would power off if that were the case?

Also, is the PSU adequate?

Is it safe to eliminate the CPU and mem at this stage?

Plans tomorrow are to try with my GFX card, test the rig outside of the case, and buy a new motherboard from PC world (temporarily) to try to eliminate the motherboard from the equation.

Thoughts, comments and suggestions (not to mention answers to my questions!) would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks guys.

i had that problem all i did was take out the motherboard and replaced it back in the case, it must have been a earth problem who knows there are so many things that can happen to pc components i remember the old 486s just stick the dam things in and fires up hope you get that fixed bro

I am having exactly the same problem in my rig. I switch on and the monitor says 'no signal'. The fans start up, I've got a green light on the motherboard, and nothing else.

Its almost like the system is waiting for something. I have to reset using the reset switch on the front, second or third go it will post. When its running I get no problems at all....

Its a new P182 case and Corsair 620w PSU. I think I will take the system out and re-install, I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for your replies guys, I'm going to remove the motherboard and rebuild it the system on cardboard to eliminate the possibility of a a short.

I've also brought my 7900GTO to see if it may be the GFX card.

Im hoping its not the PSU or CPU though :(

Couple of obvious things to check, are all the required power cables plugged in? ie the extra motherboard connector that plugs in next to the CPU, and the cables to the graphics card. (A GTX requires 2 doesnt it?)

The other thing to check is you have the risers that lift the motherboard off the back plate in the case in properly, could be shorting something out.

If its none of the obvious things do the standard test of taking everything out apart from the CPU, and slowly adding things until the POST error beeps stop.

Have you connected up properly the case speaker so you can hear if its found a problem?

Hope I'm not being too patronising here!

PK!

No - absolutely not - in fact I think you might have hit the nail on the head.

I havent connected the secondary CPU power socket, was absolutely unaware of this as this is my first PCI-E/CORE2 build and I dont remember this being in the manual although i may be mistaken.

Hopefully this will be the cause, would this definately cause the system not to POST though?

Thanks to everyone who has helped though, and especially to misterPK, for, well, treating me like a retard! ;) :p

Its easily done, dont worry. Half the problem is these massive heatsinks, they're so big once you've put one on it makes the connector a lot harder to spot. I don't think it will have done any damage. Hope that solves things for you!

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS!!!

about two months ago, bought a new PSU to replace my faulty one, still wouldnt post/bios, but it all lighted up,

anyway... went through 4 motherboards, lots of checks... and turned out to be the NEW PSU i bought at the start was faulty!!!

first thing you should do is try another PSU, dont try another motherboard yet... check everything else before u do that. (i learnt my lesson)

Thanks mate, hopefully that will do the trick. You will no doubt hear if it doesn't! I wouldnt have thought it would do any damage either, just not enough power. Not like the pre athlon xp days where you could fart and several components would fry :p

I usually build shuttles as in my experience have always been very reliable, well put together and do 90% of what a desktop system does. Without the hassles i'm going through now!

Thanks, and duly noted. Im seriously hoping its not the PSU as its the one component I do not have a test substitute. Its an enermax which have always been top drawer in my experience (Still got a 3-4 year old 350W working which has seen 4 PC's in its time).

Depending on purple shirt brigades return policy, I might try to source a cheap 775 motherboard for testing. However, they only do jeantech PSU's as far as I know, which on the most part, could not power a LED reliably

Just to let anyone who cares know - it was indeed the CPU power cable.

Thanks to all involved especially misterPK :)
