Quad Core Intel® Xeon® X3220, 2.40GHz, 2x4M Cache, 1066MHz FSB

Dual Core Intel® Xeon® 3085, 3.0 GHz, 4MB Cache, 1333MHz FSB

Both roughly the same price but which would be better for a Linux / MySQL database server? I currently have a Xeon 3060 and am looking to upgrade but can't decide if the same ghz quad or the 3ghz dual would be faster for running reports.

What are the desktop equivalents of these server devices?

I believe the Xeon 3060 is the same as E6600, the X3220 the same as Q6600 so is the 3085 the same as E8400?

I would imagine it would depend on whether the applications you will be running will take advantage of quad core or not.

I don't know why but something like a server / database just screams quad core to me.

the 3085 will be the same as an e6850

if the program uses quad core then the x3220 will be better (and up to twice as fast as the 3060), if it doesn't the 3085 will be better.

That's the problem - I can't find any benchmarks for mysql and quad cores.

There are plenty of them for quad cpu's but it's like the geeks have not embraced quad core technology.

The server will be running
Centos 5.0
MySql 5.0
php 5

I think it will be easier to find benchmarks for the desktop equivalents. What should be comparable are things like sandra cpu, memory and winrar benchmarks.

I'll check out the q6600 vs e6850 benchmarks.
