NVIDIA® Quadro® FX 2500M with 512MB dedicated graphics memory.

Just about to order this on a laptop, does anybody know what the desktop equivolent is? (consumer wise i mean, i.e. is it a 6800ultra).

Money is no object as its funded by work. I want it to be able to play games, but its a secondary consideration. I know it will do what i want it to do, but looking around i cant seem to find any comparisons of this against a desktop for gaming.

Quadro is their workstation/professional line. They use essentially the same GPUs as consumer cards but have more features and use different drivers. These cards are not intended for gaming, rather they are for things like 3D rendering, computer drafting, and graphic design.

The 2500M is their top-of-the-line mobile card at the moment.

EDIT: Beaten like a red-headed stepchild!

So with that in mind its likely to be comparable to the 7900 series?

It does use the G71 GPU, just like the 7900. If you do not intend to use this for workstation tasks you should be looking for a gaming notebook. A Geforce Go7900GTX is far better suited toward running games at full screen than a Quadro card.

Just becasue it is expensive does not mean that it is the best for the task. What is the intended task for the machine?

Well, I need it as a work machine, but I cant just go and get a pure gaming laptop, has to be justified. The tiny bit of rendering that I do is my justification for getting a laptop with a decent gfx card, but it has to be a business machine. So to be fair, its the best of what i can get. Just wondering what sort of performance i'd get out of it.

Well its turned up and its quite good, certainly good enough for the odd game here and there. Not had any problems playing games on it, no lock ups or anything like that.
