Quake 1 over LAN

Best option would be to play Quakeworld (the official multiplayer 'mod').
nQuake is a good package that installs a modern client (ezquake) and various other bits and pieces to get you started: http://nquake.com
Vanilla 'out of the box' Quake is pretty poor in comparison to something like ezquake, not just graphically but in terms of general customisation options, bug fixes and so forth.

The actual process of playing over a lan is very simple, you just run a server and then connect to the ip address. ezquake has a built-in listen server too so you don't even need to run a dedicated server if you don't want to.

Best place for information is www.quakeworld.nu and #qwrookie on Quakenet IRC if you use IRC.

God Bless Quakeworld, and all who sailed in her on the Wireplay and Barrysworld servers.

Those were the days. Qizmo, DM6, DM3, DM2 and of course UKCLDM2. /tear in eyes
