Back in the day (10 years ago) Quake1 was my first online game and i played for 5 years almost everynight online.
In "my" opinion this game has never been beat for online deathmatch and at the time the community (i played on claranet servers) just blew me away.
happy times :)

watch the first 2 levels on hard. oooo i still remember the levels :D

any other old quakers still about?

:)

Before Quake 1, i used to play Duke Nukem 3D online, on BT's Wireplay service, cost about 2p a min to play, ntb... That was well before broadband, but still it was great fun... :)

Also played Quake 1, but just thought i would add the 1st game i can recall that i played online...

If ya like the original quake, get a Nokia N95 or the 8gb version and you can play it on ya phone!!

Not done it meself, but looking into it - dont know how it will play, but im looking forward to it! Ive not even played the original before :)

How can a mobile phone play a full 3D game like that? If it can, thats amazing... But i'm guessing it will run real slow...

If ya find any more info on it, plz post about it...

Not really considering we now have dedicated 3d accelerator embedded chips for phones now (like PowerVR) so effectively at the resolutions of the phones running such an old game (10+ years) isnt that difficult (3d graphics chips only started around that time :p)

Quake is one of my all time fav games used to play it all the time say 10 years ago also :D Never played it online never knew how to back then. I now play Quake on my DS :D QuakeDS

Yup, another Quaker here. It was an article in PC Zone that got me into it, back in the days before Quakespy existed. Good times. Tried playing again the other day - deathmatch is scarily advanced now.

I loved Quake, I absolutely hammered it. However I have to say I feel its was only bettered by by the original UT. I still think even by todays standards, they have yet to be bettered in terms of sheer playability.

I still play online to this day, although not at such a high level anymore due to other commitments on my time. A few links:

www.quakeworld.nu - general portal for all things QW, has a good forum
http://nquake.sourceforge.net - great package to help newbies or returning players get started with the modern features
www.eql.nu - the main european clan league at the moment

The great thing about QW is that it is still being actively developed by members of the community, and from a technical standpoint (graphics aside) it is probably the most advanced multiplayer FPS there is. It would be the perfect vehicle for 'Pro' tournaments and it looks like Dreamhack may have a QW 1v1 event which would help to boost publicity a lot.

Love Quake Deathmatch. Used to play it with my mate over serial cable. Loved playing the Night Quake and Painkeep mods.

Deathmatch Classic was a pretty good reproduction.

Quake 1 rocks!!

I do believe, if you have it on legititmate disc (you can buy it from valve too), you can now add it to steam and play it online again over the valve network.

Most TF'ers don't realize that TF was originally made for quakeworld. had only 4 classes at the beginning if I remember correctly. I also played every night for about 5 years, although not DM. I played TF, then MegaTF (was WAY WAY better!) when it was developed. I was in what was widely recognized at the time (1997-1998) as the best MegaTF clan in the US, TSFO. I agree, as far as "purity" it's the perfect online multiplayer game.

No way was MegaTF was better than vanilla TF :) But I won't argue as we'll never agree. It is the case tho that no game has come close to matching Quakeworld's netcode. It played better with a 200 ping than most games do nowadays with ADSL pings.

Dude, the scout had jetpacks! and the soldier has proximity mines, and you could throw a toaster in the water to fry people! Way way better. lol. but I argued myself silly about this for hours back in the late 90's early 00's so this arguement was more tongue in cheek than anything :P
