Quake 4 Performance 8800GTS OC'D

Theres practically no difference unless you stop and study the textures close up (then you can see the compression artifacts if you really look for them) afaik ultra quality doesn't use any higher detail models, etc. in quake 4 :(

That's my understanding too. High is the same as Ultra but uses compression (slight performance hit and tiny IQ hit due to the compression).

Right, I don't think anyone really cares about a little compression do they? Not enough to destroy their fps anyway. It's a very odd setting if you ask me.

I just had a quick go, I don't know wtf my PC is doing, but my fps is so much better than last time. This thing just likes to play with me. 1680x1050, 2XAA on ultra running at 40-60 fps.

I think everything is fine with your system. Its because your monitors max setting is 1280 but the ultra high textures are bigger than that so your comp is spitting its dummy out resource-wise. If you could run your monitor to the same size or bigger than the ultra high textures it'd run nice :D

Then again the textures are fully uncompressed on ultra high settings so given the texture sizes, a 640 meg card would be better that a 320 meg one. With a 320 meg card you'd get HD activity cos it'd have to load and dump parts of the uncompressed textures to vid mem.

Hope this helps.

I am running Quake 4 @ 1280x1024 now, 16xQAA, 16xAF, Ultra settings and run usually in the 50's and can get over 100 in places, obviously due to my ram I gotta wait about 5 seconds for it to load due to the lack of my ram.

Quake 4 really dont look that good anymore :(

If I was going to buy another 1GB, I would have by now, the thing thats stopping me is the fact that DDR is becoming obsolete and I could be upgrading in june/july so buying DDR would be a waste of money when I should be selling my 1GB I have now soon.

yeh why is DDR so expensive? its mad!! i want another gig of the Geil stuff and cant get any ANYWHERE - bah

I guess its same as AGP, why do AGP cards that are exatly the same as the PCI-E versions go for more than the PCI-E? I suppose its because its old now and hard to get?

yeh you are probably right - i just wish i could get some - i would willingly buy another gig of Geil even if it wasnt exactly the same as what i have BUT, the CAS timings would probably mean it was incompatible - correct? think my current stuff is 2-5-2-2 or something. (not that i know what that means lol)

Reduced production as they have all switched to DDR2. I assume when DDR3 gets mainstream, DDR2 will start going up.

I aint sure on the timings, I think that you could alter the other stick of GeIL to the same timings then it would be ok/

I think its 300.

Well if the timings of the GeIL ram are allready faster than the ones of the stick you have now, then you should be able to change them to the timings of the older stick safely.
