just wondering if theres any quake experts out there?
i want to buy quake, soley to play online.
i want to know:

1. which version to get ? Q3 arena, or Q 4 ( i wish i got into counter strike 1.6 - not CS:S as theres a much bigger followign for it so dont want to make the same mistake again )

2. how is online gameing organised? dedicvated servers ( like im used to in CSS? )

3. is it REALLY as fast paced as ive seen in the various quake montages etc ?

4. which version has wor jonny 'fatal1ty' become the master of ? ( juist out of interest )

5.where on earth can i get quake 3 form ! ive alrready looked and cannot find it to buy anywhere !

cheers
Rick

If you want purely online then Quake III: Arena is without a doubt the best option. :) Fatal1ty mastered this version but he currently plays Quake IV mostly, from the videos I have seen anyway.

It is fast paced, and even though I've not played it in yonks there were lots of dedicated servers when I did.

As for where to buy Quake III, I honestly don't know. Your best bet might be auction sites, bargain bins, and computer fairs at this point.

thanks a lot.
that reminds me ! lol ( next question )
is q3 the type of game you can buiy second hand and be abloe to play online ? ( i know you cant with CS / CSS )

i have never owned quake ( obviously) ive just been attracted by the videos !

Q4 is only £12 at a well known website. btu Q3 seems to ahve the best follwoing, and the graphics dont seem THAT shabby ?

Yeah you can play Quake III: Arena online with a second-hand copy. :) Very fun too.

Not sure how big the online community is for Quake IV but don't count it out.

There's really not much to choose between Q3 and Q4 in terms of gameplay - I prefer Q4 just because it's got slightly more of a Q2 feel to it. However, there are far more people playing Q3A. I'm only sticking with Q4 because I've found a nice small community which frequents a couple of good servers (here in the US), otherwise I may have gone back to Q3A.

I don;t know..I've been a die hard quake fan since q1....played q2 since it came out and still play it...I found q3 to be terrible....I just hated it...but for some reason I love q4.

I suggest q4 although I still believe q2 to be the best

hmmmm
few mixxed views here.
i was wanting to head for q4 for the extra eye candy. but as i said... it seems a bit liekt he ehole cs 1.6 - cs source thing. maybe i made the wrong decission going into css :P.

ive just found out you can d/l a demo of q3 arena and team arena ! so im gonna give that a bash first, and also get the deo of q 4

cheers :D

oh
my
god

my eyes are bleeding !!!!!!!!!!!, my head is ounding... but boy did i just own every single player without dying !!!! ( single player agains bots on the Q3 demo lol )

thats probobly THE msot intense game ive ever played lol. considderign its so fast paced, i found it very easy tbh.
kinda sick of the graphics already thugh, so i think i might be goign with quake 4 to be honest
btw, i cant seem to find any internet sdervers for Q3 :S is that normal ?

Q3 is great fun online. Had a few games of that again a week or two ago and there were still plenty of people fragging away. Weapon balance seemed about right to my mind.
Always thought the textures looked horribly pink, and I really don't like the player models or their animation, but the gameplay shines through all that. Great game.

Q2 I never really liked. Game pace was just too slow, rocket launcher pretty useless, and overall weapon balance just too ... balanced.

Had a few games of QuakeWorld again just off the back of a game of Q3, and found myself surprised at how much quicker the pace of gameplay was.
I still don't think QW can be beaten if you're looking for frenzied gameplay and high fragrates. Yes, the Rocket Launcher and Lightning gun are very powerful in comparison to a lot of the other weapons, but thats part of the fun. It forces a player to make an effort to gain control of a map for those weapons, ammo and armours, making knowledge of a level very important.
In fact, I think I've talked myself into installing it on this Debian box for a bit of a freeforall later on :)

Quake4 I can't really comment on. Played the single-player campaign through but never liked the general feel of it enough to attempt multiplayer.

EDIT:
Not sure what protocol version that Q3 demo version is, or if demo players can play on registered servers even if the protocol version is the same.
You really need to be using either version 1.31 (no punkbuster) or 1.32 (punkbuster) I think.

Couple of points...

You're gonna be in for a shock when you actually play real people in any of the Quake games ;)

Also, trust me, if you get into Quake you'll be turning all the eye candy off anyway. My Q3A and Q4 look pretty much the same with my config.

Good luck out there

Q3 demo is nothing like the game is now with all the patches etc, The demo is slow and boring in comparison.

There are so many mods for Q3, i'm a 3wave person myself mainly as it's very fast gameplay and uses all the upto date code of Q3, Ra3 is another good Mod.

I have Q4 and it really hasn't fripped me but i can see how it could some ppl.

I've played Q3 for more than 5 years and nothing is as fast paced, quake 3 is about the gameplay over the eye candy anyway and probably has the best netcode i've seen on any game to date.

Oh and buying a second hand copy could mean you end up with a banned Key.

One thing I will say about Q4, with the latest patch the selection of DM maps is excellent - probably better than Q2 and Q3 combined, IMO. And of course you get excellent remakes of some classic maps - Retrophobopolis (QW), Over The Edge (Q2) and Campgrounds Redux (Q3A). Plus some of the standard Q4 maps are very good.

Quake 4 is probably the best bet for newer players, it's very similar to the Quake 3 Arena style deathmatch, just it feels a lot bulkier and perhaps a little slower, but I still enjoy it from time to time.

If all else fails, you can always for Unreal Tournament 2004 :p

heh heh , i know ill be in for a shock !
was just saying that basically is so damn fun ! lol it is completly mad. im used to playing CSS - a lot of it, but this game is wicked !

theres a lot of mixxed views here, but i still think im swaying towards Q4

by the way, is there a way to change the layout of the HUD in the Q3 demo, im finding it odd that the game play is in a box in the middle of the screen, with the HUD outside ( as qwell as a HUGE boarder)
thanks again for the input guys.
