I need your recommendation:
Do you prefer Quake Wras or Unreal Tournament III, in SINGLE PLAYER only.
I don't like on-line games, and I'm wondering about the bot AI.
Reviews are inconsistent in this respect.
Do you find that the bots in either of these games are adequate or pretty hopeless?

Sorry, I don't agree. The UT series (UT/2003/2004) and Quake Arena and Team arena were very satisfying in single player mode.

But does the AI for the new(er) incarnations keep this up?

Depends on which style you prefer. UT series is more "run-and-gun" - Quake Wars is slower paced and more tactical. As for the AI, I've played both quite a bit off-line and they're both excellent.

I'd go for UT I think - there's more variety of gameplay....DM, CTF, Domination, Onslaught, etc.

Quake Wars IMO

UT3 is just rehashed from older versions with pretty graphics. QW actually is something very different and well put together. Only reason it didnt do well is that the gameplay wasnt instantly accessible like other games are...

I'd say get them both as they're only about £10-15 depending where you go.

UT3 is a great game and a real blast (gameplay is somewhere between UT1 and UT2k4) but to be honest you need to be online or playing with your mates on a lan to get the most out of it.

ETQW I find is somewhere between BF2 and UT3 when it comes to gameplay and is a very under rated game which is a pity as it is fantastic once you get into it. My only criticism is the game could do with more weapons on each side to help spice things up.

I really hope we get a squel to ETQW as it really deserves it.

Why don't you like online games? As others have suggested these games are made for online play.

Back in the old days when I was on my family's PC with carpy internet I used to play these games in SP mode all the time. And then I got a decent PC and a good internet connection, and realised just how much more fun they are online :)

AI can never compare to human players. It's so much more satisfying to play against an enemy that adapts and presents such a variety of challenges.

Yeah was a shame ETQW didn't take off so well - the game is brilliant a few bugs aside... but most people didn't seem to be able to pickup on the tactical aspects of the gameplay. They also really botched the "netcode" in the final release :( earlier versions were much more responsive.

Only just saw that there were more replies.

I don't play on-line games because

1) mainly I'm hopeless at them,
2) I get distracted and wander off looking at things while I should be supporting my team,
3) I always get the servers with the cheaters,
4) ALL other players are better then me,
5) High scores on many games are simply ridiculous (see cheaters, above)
6) I'm really interested in well programmed AI,
7) I feel that on-line games are a lazy and cheap way of avoiding programming any AI.

I think I'll go with the suggestion above and get both, as nobody seems to have the impression that the bots in either game are bad.

Cheers ,everyone.
