Quakecon 2012 - John Carmack Keynote Speech

It's not his VR device though. He's only supporting it, as far as I know.

And like he said, it's nothing to get excited about for average consumers yet.

I've not seen the keynote yet, but to be clear Carmack is supporting the Oculus Rift VR headset but has also made his own headsets and showed one off at E3...

Because all current headsets are still very poor Carmack decided to make his own and improved things like getting the latency way down. With the lower latency you no longer get a delayed warping/jelly effect.

If he's supporting the Oculus Rift then it must be pretty good.

But he was talking about the Oculus Rift on Quakecon last night.

I'm pretty sure the one in the video above is also a Palmer's dev prototype.

The one that was shown off at E3 was an early version of the Rift. Carmack didn't design one by himself, he collaborated with Palmer Luckey.

Dont want to talk his efforts down though, what Carmack recently did (and is still doing) for the Rift and VR in general is beyond description.

To be clear: There wont be two new cool HMDs, the "Carmack One" and the Rift. It's the same!

Yup, it's the same, I don't know why people are trying to promote it as Carmack's VR.

I recently thought about that, and honestly i think it was actually good that so many people thought (and still think) that the Rift was Carmacks baby because...well, because he's John Carmack! The very very best publicity the Rift could ever get. Without him it would have been much more difficult to reach such a broad audience. Was so excited when i saw him posting first time at mtbs3d. :)

Carmack has made his own VR headsets. In the video i linked he mentions at 6:12 that he's built 3 experimental VR headsets but they weren't ready for E3 in time. For much of the video he talks about his own work on this stuff. But i mistakenly thought that the headset he had at E3 was his own creation when it was infact the Oculus Rift.

But he has made his own VR headsts and software for them. So there might be a slight possibility that Carmack will release his own VR headset, but i doubt that will happen as it just seems like something he's been messing about with in his spare time.

I watched the carmack speech live last night at http://www.quakelive.com/#!stream. I thought it was pretty good. I did not hear the end so if anyone has the full speech post it. I have always look forward to vr gaming and agreed completely with his view on how it needs to be for it to be viable. I am pleased that carmack has an interest in this medium and i look forward to anything that comes of it.
