My mum is going on a horseback safari in Botswana, and her bf is looking to get her a camera for the trip. His requirements have me a bit stumped, so I was hoping one of you chaps might know more than me!

Needs: good optical zoom, robust, compact.

I initially though a bridge camera would be the way forwards, but it might be a bit chunky to have on a horse ride.

Any suggestions?

If a bridge style camera is an option then the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS would be ideal if it really need to be compact then the Panasonic Lumix TZ40 is worth a look it has a massive zoom range for something so small.

One thing they will need to be aware of is that most of the best sightings on a safari are early in the monring or around dusk so the light is often not the greatest so what ever they but low light performance will be more important than they think!

Well they were initially looking at the SX280, which seems to excel in high iso performance and is sharp throughout the 50-500mm effective zoom range, and adjustable screen brightness may help with bright sun. My mum is not the best with gadgets though, so I was considering recommending the cheaper SX270 since it lacks the WiFi and gps that I think would only use up battery. I'll check out the TZ40 and see how it compares!

The alternative is the hx50 with its 700mm effective focal length, but I'm concerned that the poor high iso performance would cripple it, especially when using the long end of the lens.

What about the previous model? SX260 HS. There's a ton of good reviews about it & its on offer for £130 at the indian food place. I've just bought one after my old panny FS8 now refuses to accept SD cards. 1st impressions are good & I'm a point, shoot, camera back in pocket & ask questions later bloke. :p

I think his budget isn't really an issue. He'll probably just get the SX280 since my mum has already seen it in a shop and liked it.
