I am looking for someone or some company to design a fairly simple website.

All it will have is a custom coded php page echoing from an sql table and an admin page accessed through the website to edit the values in the table.

Anyone have any rough ideas on costs / who is good to use?

There are too many website designers out there and it is hard who to trust, I was thinking of using one of the foriegn designers (apparently low priced + great quality) on them websites where they advertise for work?

Unsure if this is allowed or not - if it is not, sorry.

hope you dont mind me jumping in here as well, but i would also be interested to know of good web designers as i would like a photography site making to show my work :)

Someone on here would be the most secure way. Probably a little discounted, or possibly free, as you're a fellow OcUKer :p

Someone I am doing a site for got quoted near on £6,000 for that kind of spec.

They don't know a thing about webdesign/developement.

Needless to say I piped up when I heard, and said i'd do it for 8 times less.

didnt think we was allowed to hoot our own horn, business wise?

It's not my site or company or a friend's site or company. They just look pretty good and host my favorite calender.

Would you really want him working for you? I'm not sure I would given his attitude.

edit:
Forgot to mention Steve Woods or Matt Denyer are both good and reasonably priced.

I wasn't, just telling him to watch out for big companies overcharging.

The work I am doing of that spec is for one of the directors at work.

Well through a recommendation of a friend I found someone. I also got some quotes, they all varied from £80 to... LOL...£700.

Luckily I am not that stupid, it was not a complex job just required a bit of time. Actually took 2 hours ish and is very good ^^

I fail to understand why developers assume because it is custom and has code the prices should be really high?

It's all opinion but it's because it is a skill only a few possess, it's not just a few clicks here and there lol, it ties along with design theory and how well it is presented, sure the difference of a couple of hundred quid might be minimum but if you pay top dollar you generally get top dollar. There are millions of wannabe designers out there too, like moi for one, who can't charge a premium because we're just starting out, you can't pay David Beckham £100,000 a week as a 17yr old playing for Leyton Orient. :p

Wish it were true though :D :p

i think this too, but then feel that it may be because of the amount of money you could earn from having a website is huge and apart from the initial setting up costs, it doesn't cost much either.

Everyone has to make a living. £50-£100/hour is quite fair for a small, one-off job and you'll find it's generally the going rate. Whether you get a quality job for that money or not is another matter entirely.

Obviously if you get someone who is short on work, a part timer/hobbyist or is eager to build a portfolio, they'll probably do it for whatever you're willing to pay.
