Hi all,

We are having an extension starting in the new year, and it will be a kitchen through diner through lounge. Essentially, we are looking at using quartz tiles from Oman for the floor, and having piped underfloor heating. Is this feasible? - we have heard from some people that it would only transfer heat through the grout lines, thus making the underfloor heating essentially pointless, and have heard from others that it would work just fine.

Would the heat be transferred through the tile itself just like porcelain or should we stick to porcelain tiles?

Thanks,

Shiv

Not sure they are the same. They are a composite tile (like quartz countertops), this sounds like proper stone tiles, possibly quartzite (OP?).

I don't see why they wouldn't let heat through. Natural stone is a great option above underfloor heating. It may take a little longer to warm up (thickness of tile - probably 3/8" or 1/2") but will take longer to cool down as well.

As Bullyboy said, use a decoupling membrane and make sure the floor can hold the weight if it's not on concrete. There is also a Ditra membrane (Ditra Heat) designed for underfloor heating, which makes installing the cable really easy if you get compatible cable.
