Do I need to charge it for 24 hours before I turn it on for the first time? If so, what do I do - plug it into the mains and leave it? Theres no info on what to do in the box and the online manual tells me nothing!

I jus turned it on as it came, jus like my 3G and I've had no problems with either, I got 3G average battery life, duno what average for 3GS yet so I cant say if its average, certainly is noticeable longer than my 3G though.

You're fine to turn it on and start using it straight away, newer batteries these days don't suffer from the memory effect the old types did. It should be about half charged anyway.

I ask because that's what the O2 guy said (to charge it for 24hrs). I didnt think much of it as I'd have thought it'd be covered in the manual... but no not a hint as to what to do! :(

Whilst browsing the net I came across something which says that the iPhone wont charge while off - is that true?

If you try charging it whilst it's off, doesn't it turn itself on? Pretty sure of it.

Just start charging it then turn it on after a few minutes so that it has enough charge to power up and then it should be able to accept more charge than is being used at any time so no different to being charged with it off.

I know that it's not strictly necessary but I still like to make sure that the first time I charge any new batteries I try to get a charge of a minimum of 12 hours. I just feel a bit happier doing it, I don't know whether it makes any difference or not.

I am not sure why but people seem to be stuck in a rut about battery memory which is funny because when it was an issue people just complained about it and didn't try to avoid it.

There should probably be something about this in a sticky at some point.
