Bought a quest 3 for my lad for Christmas and spent a couple hours setting it up on our computer. He doesn’t know.

He will be keen to play half-life alyx as he got it in the sale without a VR headset and he is hoping Santa brings him one.

So in order to get my head around it thought id set it up.

First. It all seems to work as a standalone device. Super. Nothing seems wrong. No immediate dead pixels etc.

I’ve now plugged it into the computer via a recommended 3rd party cable.

Here is the fun. I only had limited time, so just tried one game that was installed which had VR (portal VR).

It kinda works. If I launch via steam link. It doesn’t work and crashes. Quick google says this is true for everyone, guess it’s an old game and not fixed for all new setups.

I then tried with just Meta Quest Link app. That worked. But I had to change the compatibility of the game to win 7 to sort some elevation issue where I was under the floor.

I really needed to download a modern game to test.

But now the question.

When I logged into his windows account meta quest link would not load. Quick good says registry issues with multiple users. Common issue especially in education labs. Meh

I then bought virtual desktop. Installed under my account but works under his login too.

That seems sublime compared to the other apps (meta quest or steam link)

However. Can I now just remove meta quest link from the PC and Steam Link app from the Quest 3? Steam Link looks good and presume it will work with more modern games.

It all seems overly complicated with all these apps, so hoping I can just use virtual desktop streamer on the computer and the companion app installed on the quest.

He is a smart lad, but it I’m sure it will cause a headache.

Why don’t I try? Time limited and probably won’t get a chance to try again for a week.

I also bought a prismxr so we can get rid of the HMD to PC cable. That all seemed quite simple to setup.

If you are using virtual desktop the only additional thing you need is steamvr, nothing else. No meta app, no steam link, nothing.
Thanks mate. Puts my mind at rest. I’ll grab an hour and try in a week or two and hopefully have it all running ok.

Hopefully he can have a go Christmas Day for an hour without me having to work out how to get it to run for a few hours lol!

Managed to grab an hour secretly to test this out.

Two things. Yup only need VD. Thanks.

Also as I have a 3080, very important to not select AV1 codec. It’s still great and smooth, but h264+ allows me to increase bitrate and ramp up the graphics.

Not sure why VD defaulted to that code when my card does not support it.

The prismxr seems to be doing its job. But kinda regret not spending another £40 and getting a proper router. Will see if it lasts. But it is very impressive.

All packed up for Christmas Day!

Wait... was the Santa bit a joke or is he young enough to still believe in Santa? If it's the latter, he's really too young to be using a VR headset for anything other than very short, supervised sessions.
Haha he is 12. 13 in April.

He knows Santa isn’t real, but we continue the story at home. I’m sure at school it will be, my dad got me a VR headset.

Fairies still adorn the tree every night with little packs of 3 chocolates too :-)

Agree on usage. He won’t be allowed much time on it and will be supervised anyway.
