After my lovely waterfall speakers got damaged to the point it'll cost about £1000 to repair which is more than i paid for them, its time to start looking out for something new i've decided.

Been looking up to around the similar value of my Waterfalls which were around £2500 new. However a caveat is that they can’t be too huge in size. My Waterfalls were probably around a meter high and around 17cm square. An awful lot of floorstanders seem to have a much larger footprint.

My shortlist then seemed to hover around the

Monitor Audio GX200’s
PMC Twenty 23’s
B&W CM9’s
Neat Motive 1
Shahinian Compass/Arc

Popped into Audio-T today to listen to the Monitor Audios and the PMC’s. First be warned I’m pretty useless at describing sounds (along with virtually anything, whether its food, whisky etc!)

First the GX200’s. God how they look stunning, and even better in the flesh in the Bebunga veneer.

How I wanted these to sound as good as they look, and they did pretty well and seemed very exciting and forward to me. The problem was that they were quite bright up top. I ended up feeling that whilst they sounded good at first they’d become quite tiring when sitting down for a while. A bit disappointing for me as I had high hopes. Possibly to do with the metal ribbon tweeter as I’ve not heard any speakers like that before. Seemed to be quite unforgiving of poor recordings and I can see that ruining the enjoyment of some of my cd’s at home.

Next I heard the PMC’s.

These were quite breathe taking for me and I absolutely loved them. The way they immersed me into the music was quite incredible and truly seemed to just “disappear”. With them having no rear port they’d also probably be better to integrate into my room as they’ll be placed within a bay window.
The only part that put me off them was the fact that on some tracks the bass seemed to sound as if it was coming from a room next door rather than being with me. Particularly on a couple of Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip tracks. I then tried the slightly larger PMC Twenty 24’s which certainly seemed to address the issue of a slightly more in your face bass response which I liked and just seemed to sound so effortless. The main problem here was that they’re considerably larger and might be a bit too big for my room.

I had hoped to listen to a pair of Kudos C2’s which were on offer but I had to dash back to work. Possibly another day.

As it stands, the PMC’s 23’s are probably in the lead, after ruling out the 24’s due to size and the hefty price increase. Its been a while since I’ve listened to any B&W speakers and haven’t heard any of Neats offerings before. I’ve very excited to listen to a pair of Shahinians but I’m not sure if the Compass’ will give me the bass kick I often crave.

Can anyone think of any other speakers to look out for?

The rest of my hifi is

Densen B410 Cd player
Densen DM20 Pre amp
Avondale S100 Dual Mono Power Amp

I have the Montor Audio GS10s (before they went to the ribbon tweeter) and I love the way they sound. You do have to be careful with how you partner them or they can sound bright. In a well balanced system though its not a problem.

Try and give the Spendor range a listen if you can. I really liked the A6 when I heard them a while back. Sounded fantastic and would be on my shortlist.

Hmm possibly. I was testing them with a NAIM, pre power combo, i think it was the 202/200 combo.

My power amp is damaged and waiting to be fixed so that seemed to be a fairly similar match. Perhaps i'll go back for another listen when i get mine back from repair as i really did want to like them.

Listen to a pair of Harbeths and you will never look at another speaker again. Not the worlds pretiest speaker but you can listen for hours and they just get better sounding. After all the BBC fit them in every one of their studios world wide, plus they are used in a lot of high end recording studios.

The only problem with Harbeths is they will show any imperfections in playback chain in the most exquisite detail :)

You have been warned !

Hmmm... I like MA's Bronze and Silver ranges but IMO the Golds are bettered at a similar price by other speakers. Focals come to mind. I can see how the PMC would be a good partnership with the Naim gear. Naim is quite forward, and partnering with the polite but toppy GX's wouldn't be my first choice either. SImilarly B&W isn't a sound I get on with terribly well either.

Get a home dem of the PMCs, or pop down the M60 25 minutes to the Audio Works at Cheadle - Have a listen to what the Focals can do. Have a chat with Larry or Ed. Tell them Chris Frost recommended them :)

If you want a more "in your face bass response" then you are going to have to buy speakers with bigger cabinets.... Speakers with low volume slimline cabinets simply will not have the bass response of bigger speakers. Either that or buy a seperate subwoofer.

These might be too big but I recommend KEF R500.

Yesterday I bought the KEF R300 after popping into my local hifi shop for a demo of PMC speakers, I was looking for stand mounts as my room is small. I listened to the PMC TWENTY.21, I found them a bit bright and lacking in bass. Next I tried Proac Response 115, these had nice bass but the vocals lacked badly. Then I tried the KEF, I have never been a fan of KEF before but after I heard these I was totally blown away.

Have a read of some reviews but most importantly have a listen for yourself.

Interesting, i'll try and find somewhere that does the Kefs.

Lucid, i'll try and get down there at the weekend. I'm going to try to head to either Doug Bradys Hifi for the Neat Motives and the Wilson Benesch Square 2 (and possibly a pair of Proacs). And then Audio Counsel (also in Cheadle) to listen to the Shahinians aswell as possibly the Densen B410.

Its been a long time since i heard a pair of B&W's as i had a pair of 602's when i was 18 and loved them then but since owning some much better speakers recently and changed my musical tastes a little i'm not sure if they'll still be for me.

Simon - I'd love a pair of Harbeths, the guy i bought my Densen had a pair of HL5's which were excellent. However the room is also the front room of a terrace and i need to respect my wife and not have huge ungodly speakers. Otherwise i'd get some old Tannoys!!!

Marv, although I massively recommend the PMC's, and I'm sure Lowe will turn up soon and say the same thing, I noticed a little while ago that Blok do speaker renovations - the example on their site is a full 5.1 set up that they did for £999.99. If your is only two floorstanders, perhaps it's worth contacting them to see if what it would cost to have yours fixed (depending on the damage of course), might be a bit cheaper than the £1k you stated in the original post?

Thanks, i'll certainly give them a call. I've not got any quotes yet. It was just a price based on a quote of £190 a driver direct from Waterfall. As they're quite old they'd probably need replacing in both speakers, which would be around £750 for parts (providing its only the drivers at fault) then labour on top.

Then again it might not be the drivers at all and be something else!!

Edit: Just looked and it seems that £999 is just a cost for veneering existing speakers rather than any particular repair.

Wasn't sure what was actually wrong with the speakers so thought it was worth a mention! Nothing on the bay I guess for the dodgy parts?

PMC's do work very well with Naim, the only other speakers I could recommend as worth a listen to is ProAc's, but it will depend on how these all work with your system.

Sadly not, i think they use drivers by Triangle who again have a fairly small market share which means parts aren't too easy to come by.

I recall when i bought them there was a guy selling a single speaker for a couple hundred. How i wish i'd bought it now!

I have heard that re PMC's and Naim which makes me wonder how much it was the pairing even though my power amp is probably quite naim based (although better by many listeners to even the NAP 250)

PMC's, at least in my experience, seem to work well with pretty much everything you can throw at them. Lowe for example uses them at work in a studio, and at home he has FB1i sigs going through a Sony AV receiver with Behringer power amps, he's the person who recommended them to me, and I've been hooked since my first listen.

I've had several Demo's, listened to DB1i's (which I now own), TB2i's, GB1i's, FB1i's which were great, 21's, and 23's which were also both stonkingly good. I've heard them all through an Onkyo AV Receiver, two Yamaha AV Receivers (RX-V1400 and 3900), Cyrus 8 series pre/power combo, cd player and streamer, Naim SuperUniti, and Musical Fidelity M3i, M1clic and M1CDT and M1DAC. I went with the Musical Fidelity M3i and M1Clic, but they didn't sound bad on anything to be honest.

Have you heard the OB1's at all? Theres a pair going for decent money on eBay at the moment i've got my eye on and wondering how they'd compare to the 23's

They were a bit out of my price range, they did have them in the shop though ;)

As far as I'm aware it's the additional larger driver added on to the FB1's so I would imagine they are just more of the same. There's a PMC owners thread over on AVForums which can probably help though, as I'm not too sure how they would compare to the 23's. I found the two ranges sound very different and it was just down to personal preference, both sounding very good, just in different ways.

XTZ do some great speakers, although you'd have to order from Audio Sanctum in order to audition, unless you drove there (XTZ are a sell-direct company but sell through AS in the UK as to make it easier for people to hear them). Just an idea. Great value for money (see the extensive AVF thread).

The 99.38 MKII's fall well within your budget

OB1i will be my next (home) speakers without a doubt. The midrange unit, whilst not PMCs prime unit still outclasses any two way design they do IMHO. IB1 would be nice at home but my room isn't big enough to not suffer with modal issues since they dig deep! :)
