How have you connected your xbox to some kind of surround sound system, if you have?

As far as i am aware the only way is via an optical cable. If someone knows a way of doing it by a Co-axial please tell me cause i could do with freeing up my optical for something else.

You've got two options: analogue stereo, or optical

If you go optical you can choose between stereo and Dolby Digital (DD or DTS for DVDs)

Optical -> Coax adapters can be had for about £15.

Hmmm now to find an amp with optical input.
I haven't bought an amp for about 8 years. I wonder what's available.

Phono doesn't do 5.1 sound. You need to buy an optical cable and plug it into your receiver.

Got my 360 into my Surround system via phono leads and it comes out in 5:1..... only got one optical input, and that come off the Sky+ system :(

Depends on what kind of money you're spending, but there's many many amps available these days.

That'll be Pro Logic. The amp takes a 2 channel source and magically guesses where the sound should go.

If you want proper 5.1 you'll have to use optical. If you only have 1 input, then you can buy optical switches.

Well, not magically guesses... with Dolby Pro Logic extra channel information is matrix encoded onto the left and right channels using phase shifting.

I'm sorry your wrong, it's done via magic. :p

I remember reading a bit about how Pro Logic works, and it's pretty amazing what it does. Some films can sound great through it, just like the proper 5.1 track.

But still if you have an optical input which any amp should have, then let the 360 put it to good use. Some of the games sound brilliant through it.

Thanks guys, found a cheap place for decent SPDIF cables and a switch box for £8, so i can have 5:1 from Sky and the Xbox :D

Got my 360 connected upto my home cinema surround sound system via optical.
Denon 1906 Amp, and kef 1005 egg speakers.

Sounds awesome in Dolby Digital, the whole house shakes when im playing Call of Duty 3. Really makes a big difference to game experience.
Good job im single and live in a detatched house, the neighbours wouldnt be happy :)
