Question about a loose cable...

I've built my first PC, and everything is running fine, no problems at all, except that I can't seem to manage to get a stable overclock...

Anyways, aside from that, my PSU is a XFX 650W XXX Edition Modular Power Supply and I was just wondering what the 8 pin cable does that is split into two fours? (not the main motherboard one) Its just hanging about in my PC and I have literally no idea what it does. Does it do anything?

It could be for audio or something as I've not plugged in any speakers/headphones yet, but other than that I have no idea what it could be. Any ideas?

Thanks.

That plugs into the motherboard near the cpu socket, it either needs a 4 or 8pin inserted depending on the motherboard.

P.S Have you stopped messing around with those molex to 6pin adapters and using the cables actually supplied with the PSU for the two 5850's?

I had an 8 pin cable though, so I put that into the socket near the CPU as I'd guessed that's what it was for and its working fine. Was this 8 pin meant for something else?

And yes, I didn't realise that the extra two cables didn't come ready fitted into the PSU, the first two did, but I had to root around all the boxes to find the other two to stick into the second card. Seems pretty simple when I now think about it, no wonder you brought the caps lock out onto me ;).

What power connector have you got plugged into the 4 or 8 pin socket by the CPU?

The PSU had an 8 pin cable coming out of the back so I just plugged that in to the 8 pin socket next to the CPU, was that wrong? Its been running for about 12 hours with no problems with this one in without any complaints!

Looks like, for some reason, that PSU has a 4+4 and a 8 pin CPU 12v connector. This probably means the PSU would be suitable for dual CPU boards. My old OCZ used to have a 4+4 and a single 4 pin ATX 12v.

Any preference on which one to use? Or does it not matter?
