Question about adjusting CPU fan speeds using motherboard controls

I'm trying to make my system run a bit quieter, so I've turned down all my chassis fans manually, but this isn't an option with my CPU fans. I have this cooler:

So I assumed I'd have to use my motherboard to adjust the fan speed (my motherboard is an Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z). So I've been into Asus Fan Xpert and changed my CPU fan settings from 'disabled' (i.e. 100% all the time) to 'Standard' (i.e. 20-100% depending on temperatures).

However, this doesn't seem to have had any effect on the fan speed at all. Both of my CPU fans are still running at 2000 rpm. What am I missing here?

I don't have that option on my board. However, I have read that if I plug the CPU fans into chassis headers I will be able to change speeds then. Might try that.
