Question about Arctic Silver 5

Hi,

I recently applied AS5 to my E6550 and plonked on the Akasa AK-965 Heatsink and Fan. It is a triple copper heatpipe with Aluminum fins and 90mm fan.

At the stage, after about 4 days after application of the AS5, temps at full load are hitting 60 degrees C+

On a 2.9ghz overclock, full load is way too hot, hitting as high as 80 degrees, so that has been backed back down to standard. Shame as it was looking good on a very brief Orthos stress test.

Should the AS5 start to make a difference in a few more days? I am seriously thinking of a new Cooler for the CPU but there isn't much clearance from the CPU socket and the Northbridge Heatsink. The mobo is an Abit FP-IN9 SLi nForce 650. (http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-124-AB).

What compact coolers are recommended if it is to be replaced, or is it worth getting some cleaner, cleaning the cpu and fan and re-seating it with new AS5?

Not sure if part of the problem is down to the push pin clips on the cooler. They don't seem to be the most secure in the world.

Any suggestions would be welcome. I just want to get this new rig right :)

Thanks

The AS5 will only help for a couple more degrees.

How much AS5 did you apply to the chip?

I put an even coat on the CPU. I tried setting in a line as per the instructions on the Arctic Silver Website but temps where even worse.

I really do wonder if it is making a poor contact on the heat spreader to be honest.

I would take off the cooler and see if the heatsink has been touching the CPU evenly.

And then re-apply the bare minimum of AS5.

Re-applied just and about 16 degrees lower running folding@home. Was running at 50+, now around 35.

Think part of the problem was the clips. They didn't seem to be locking correctly. Taken the ones from the stock cooler and that seems to have helped big style.

rather than start a new thread...

how long will thermal compound last? i bought some AS 5 and will only be using it on one PC.
will it be usable in a few years still?

is it advisable to reapply every so often?

It's supposed to separate over time, I've read that it should be stored upright with the tip facing down so that any separation rises to the back of the tube and doesn't affect future use.
