I have some hooks which I want to attach to an internal wall and being fairly new to DIY I'm not too sure what the best way to do this is. Knocking on the wall it sounds hollow so I assumed I'd need some type of fixing such as this

but when I tried to screw it into the wall it just made a hole and didn't drive its way into the wall

What's the best way of attaching things to an internal wall like this? Would ordinary wall plugs and screws work?

Looks like a standard dot and dab wall to me so
Get longer screws and plugs and fix as normal but do not over tighten :)
How deep is the hole in the first pic?

The hole in the pic is about 1" deep. I did drill a pilot hole for the fitting I tried but don't think it was quite deep enough. I've thought about the hollow wall anchors but the wall must be a max of 3" thick (it's a bit hard to measure so not 100%), and drilling a pilot hole for the fitting I tried I didn't find the hollow part of the wall which I assume are needed for the hollow wall anchors. I didn't want to go too deep as I don't want the drill to come out the other side of the wall :-/

It's a dividing wall between a bedroom and bathroom and only max 3" thick so no brick behind it

Your pics look like there is adhesive behind the plasterboard (brownish splodge), which would suggest it's dot n dab onto a solid wall?

Is it a hollow cavity then? Stud wall? If so, as the other replies or into the studwork :)
