Once installed and I buy a game I will only be bale to play it on one machine ? I am currently a way and want to buy ETW to play on my laptop but when I get home I would like to install it on my PC as well.

I am guessing you cant do this thou or every one would be chipping in for the game and playing

No, you buy the game to your account. If you log into steam on a different computer it will list in your owned but not installed games...simply double click it and it installs :) I am not certain of this, but i am quite sure as you buy the game to your account and them making it only available to one PC makes no sense.

Only one account can be logged in at any one time. Once you log into an account, any other machine logged in will be logged off.

I have been logged into steam on more than 1 computer, i think it only matters for games, so like if im playing CS:S then I wouldnt be able to play it on another pc, but I could play TF2.

Are you sure? I loaned my detials to my buddy to try L4D before he bought it, as soon as he logged in it logged me out of steam full stop.

i have my steam account on about 4 pc's (all played by me)

once you login to steam, it logs out any other active logins that you have.

like messenger..

steam is the best :)

edit, my only gripe with steam is it takes so damn long to open :E, even on a quad core machine, it acts like a slug

Yeah true but apart from that its an excellent idea and is a step in the right direction to stop pirating. Microsoft limited installs etc only encourages pirating IMO.
