Question about contract renewals

I spoke with an account manager at Vodafone today who said that I could extend my contract beyond the 12 months and usually get at least 50% off line rental.

Obviously they must love this because it saves them forking out for a handset, but does anyone know if the extension will tie me into a 12 month contract extension? Suppose 4 months into the extension I wish to cancel can this be done? I called Vodafone back but the stilly woman told me it would definitely be for another 12 months firm, also said she wouldn't be able to put me through to an account manager to confirm becuase I was being 'hypotethical' ?!?

Anyway I can't see why there would be a need for a fixed length contract since Vodafone wouldn't need to recover any subsidies - was she just talking out of her rear end?

I have had similar battles with Sky extending contracts and being told I have to wait for another 12 months, then when I actually get transferred to someone who understands the concept of subsidy reclaim I am of course allowed to cancel!

Sorry about the rambling post.

If you don't upgrade and stay as you are after your initial 12 months then you are not tied down, you can cancel at any time after giving 12 months notice.

If you upgrade your phone whilst in your initial 12 months contract or after your initial 12 month contract then that will renew your contract and you would be tied down again.

Yup, sure, but specifically with Vodafone if I take out a deal to reduce my line rental after 12 months, will this tie me in?
