Hi there, I plan to install F.E.A.R later and was *wondering* if my machine could run F.E.A.R with Maximum details and 2x AA 8xAF, machine specs below.

AMD Athlon 64 Winchester 3000+ @ 2.5Ghz (512L2)
ASUS GeForce 7900GT GDD3 256Mb 532Mhz core, 784Mhz ram (DDR)
Geil 2x512MB PC3200 CAS 2.5 (IT's the ram I'm worried about on this game formax details)
Gigabyte K8NF-9 NF4

Any responses appreciated.

Just try it an see.

You may have to drop a few of the settings to medium to get consistant frame rates but most you can still keep on max. (Things like Dynamic lighting / shadows etc really hit performance in fear)

Will do, I've played F.E.A.R before on this PC some months ago, however that was with my (now replaced) Powercolor X800GT016 256MB card, hoping for a big improvement in performance :p

The ram is going to be the major sticking point. Will probably have a few custom "load" points to contend with :}

really depends on what resolution you want to play it at also. 1Gb RAM is a bit on the week side to be playing at max details. I played the first half of the game with 1Gb and it was quite stuttery and the second with 2GB and it was as smooth as a babies butt.

Even with details on medium it wasnt great on my machine with 1gb. 2gb is better all round tbh -> before I got 2gb when I finished playing fear windows would be slowwwwwwww. Now with 2gb I can alt tab out of any game and everything is very responsive.

Some people will argue the toss, but its just because they are so passionate at not having an old machine ;)

I know it's obvious, but I just wanted to confirm that you're playing at 1280x1024. If so then it should be pretty much ok (50-60fps average), though if there is a weak spot it will be the ram.

I havent come across a system yet to run it perfect at maximum settings:/

with soft shadows and 4xAA its can dip below 60 fps quite often even with 7900gtx sli.

If I switch everything on full (except soft shadows, which rapes your pc) I cannot go higher than 1024 x 768 and I have a higher spec system than you. Man is this game thirsty.

At 1680x1050 with everything on (including soft shadows), I get the following when I do the performance test:

Min - 28
Ave - 63
Max - 181

FPS Distribution

0% - 25 or less
12% - 25 to 40
88% - >40

So it's possible to get decent FPS with a less than cutting edge system although my system is fairly top-end.

I think the key to a good experience with FEAR is the 2GB of ram. I am soon to upgrade mine, as I get an average of about 56fps at 1680x1050 with most settings on max (no soft shadows), but when I play it does the constant texture loading thing!
