due to bad timing (no excusre really, i know, been away on a course blah blah blah) i've let the mot slip on my car. it expired on the 27th, i managed to get it booked in for today and it's failed. turned out there was a lot more wrong with it that i had expected - so much so that i'm not going to get it repaired, simply chuck it on ebay. i need to recover the vehicle from the testing place, it's taxed and insured, but obviously the mot is now expired...can i legally drive it home?

edit: i suppose the issue i may come across is that because its failed the mot this invalidates insurance? the fault's arent such that the car is dangerous to drive i.e. something like a wheel bearing, or brakes etc - just un-economical to repair.

i've answered my own question i think. ****. anyone in/around leamington with a low-loader want to do me a favour for a few beer tokens?!

afaik the only place you can drive with a car with a failed mot is to and FROM the mot centre. UNLESS the mot tester tells you it is unfit for use on the road. If they say its fine (which it sounds like they will) then its fine. Otherwise no one would ever be able to fail an mot without getting a car transporter.

i think it is ok to drive it if it has failed the *new* mot test, under the assumption that the *old* certificate is still valid...but because mine isnt (expired last thursday) i think i am buggered. no mot = no insurance = sods law that ill get pulled or end up in a prang. i think the *only* way to be legal is to get it towed. it's only about 3-4 miles too...grrr!

push it! Make a nice Sunday afternoon out of it, take a few mates take some beer, every hour break for half an hour with a beer or two! If its raining though, just drive it :)

AFAIK you will be covered by your insurance for driving to and from a MoT, even if your old one has expired.

unfortunately that idea is flawed as if any of them have the keys on them and they're over the limit then they can be done with 'intent' to drink drive even if they haven't started the car. :)

nope. I believe you used to be able to use the old mot after failing a new one but I'm told by the mot place that you can't any more (if you even could). But that's a different issue entirely.

You can drive to and from an MOT unless your car isn't roadworthy (I mean properly dangerous). It would be completely unworkable otherwise, how would you get an MOT if you can't drive to the station (after its expired) and if you did and it fails how would you get it home? The law isn't that much of an ass.

If you don't believe me look on the MOT website or ask the MOT station. No MOT is unendorsable anyway.

As said, unless its been declared unfit to drive, you can drive it to and from the mot testing station if insured...
:)

you can drive it back from the mot station, irrespective of whether it passed or whether you still have an old valid mot. only if it fails on something really bad, eg the brakes could totally fail, then the station might not let you drive it away.

i wouldn't bother towing it, cos you still need an mot if your car is being towed, and towing it not the safest thing to do at the best of times, so why bother.

yeah im gonna ask around tomorrow.

Why? You have already been given the correct answer, it's perfectly legal to drive it back from the MOT station as long as the tester has not filled in the section stating it is dangerous to drive on the road.

No MOT does not invalidate your insurance either, unless your policy specifically mentions this (most don't).
