I know the basics - the monitor refreshes the same amount of times as the actual frames are rendered, but what happens if for example the fps reaches 160 fps but the monitor is only 144hz capable?

AFAIK its like vsync in that regard - if you have g-sync enabled it will cap at the monitor refresh rate.

If gsync is enabled the frames lock to the maximum refresh, so on a 144hz monitor it won't go over 144fps.

Cheers guys, that's enough to stop me from buying it as the whole point was to get rid of vsync and screen tearing.

I guess you intend to be running over 144fps then?

No actually i'm not, infact I am happy with 60fps at the moment but I was just wondering if vsync is completely eliminated because the extra input lag makes it unplayable (for me). I was asking to help me decide whether that asus 144hz gsync montor @1440p is worth the extra £520 over a korean ips 1440p monitor.

Yep, and its the input latency that really gets on my nerves. I've got some big decisions to make
