I spent a lunch hour playing with Garageband today in a well know PC reseller and got a nice little tune together with just the selection of basic samples available (I know they're designed in terms of key and tempo to be easy) but I couldn't really find much out about recording your own instruments.

Has anyone recorded their own instruments through this?

I was thinking of recording my acoustic through a microphone.

Failing this is there any other good music packages on the mac that anyone can recommend?

Finally is there a 'visual cafe' place for samples etc? I remember in the days of SoundTracker having about 15 discs of sound samples..

Yup - you can plug in your own instruments using microphones, breakout boxes etc - that is what it is designed for.
