Question about GPU fan speeds

I have an ATI 5850...Ok my question is pretty simple. If i make the fan speed 100% in the Catalyst Controll centre, will it cause any problems? Is it ok to put the fan on 100% ? I know it's louder, but could anything happen?

Thanks

Edit. I know this might seem like a silly question...It's just my fan speed on default is 20%...

Are you sure the fan speed doesn't change? My fan speed on my 4850 is 28% and ranks it up when its under load.

Running it at 100% would reduce the life of it through wear.

If you don't like the default fan profiles of your card you can adjust them by editing the BIOS yourself or using MSI afterburner to modify the way the fan ramps up with temerature. There's no reason to run the fan at 100% ever, unless you clock the living daylights out of the card and like benching for giggles.

Pretty much this.

On the other hand, the 'mean time to failure' of fans in general usually far exceeds their actual use so I suppose you could run it at 100%, but really there is no need. GPUs have surprisingly hight temperature tolerances and are among the most quickly replaced parts so yeah... why ?

As far as your actual question goes, sure why not. It's -extremely- rare for people to report a broken GPU fan while overheating cards and, by extension, faster running fans are commonplace.
